EASTVIEW 6th MAN CLUB
MEETING MINUTES
April 20, 2009
The meeting began around 7:10 p.m. with Gregg Kuhn welcoming everyone in attendance.
Agenda Items-
MYAS Tournament wrap-up
Tedd thanked everyone for their efforts and support of hosting this fundraising event for
the booster club. Overall, the tournament was a great success and notes have been made
for next year's tournament coordinator. Ted has confirmed the dates for next year's
tournament as April 10-11. EVHS gym availability has been confirmed with Joan
Beckman and MYAS is being nailed down as well. The 2010 spring tournament will be
held after Easter and Spring Break.
Fastbreak Summer League
Jim Narum reminded everyone of the summer schedule and the location change for this
year at AVHS. Eastview will probably have two JV teams playing Thursday and one
Varsity team playing Tuesday. All parents and players will be asked to run the clock/
scoring table as well as the light concession stand. Coach Gerber reminded everyone that
we may need to assist in chair setup and cleaning since we are using facilities at AVHS.
Jodi Ulrich is managing the volunteer schedule which will be determined after Coach
Gerber selects the players for each team. This is the second biggest fundraising event for
the booster club so all families and players must work their volunteer time slot.
Finances/Budget
Mark Losee was thankful of our tournament revenue to pay off some outstanding bills.
Currently, the balance is $7,000 and we'll be okay going into Fastbreak. Mark did mention
we are still not out of the woods as the balance going into the next season is underneath
what is required to handle the budget. Further revenue is needed to make it through next
year.
Fundraising
Gregg Kuhn mentioned there has been fundraising discussions of adding "one-day" super
saver tournaments. The MYAS model is good for the booster club as we do none of the
promoting; we just host the facilities. Currently, Coach Gerber and the booster club
officers are working on securing gym space with EVHS before we can commit to MYAS.
In addition, there was discussion to create a long-term revenue plan set aside for larger
items that do not happen yearly; these items are typically not covered by the athletic budget
from EVHS. A program fee is being reviewed to help support the purchases of uniforms,
equipment, etc. that require more funds than the typical 12-month budget can support.
There is also anticipation with the district cuts that the booster club will be asked to pick up
transportation costs. The Tip-off Classic event was discussed and there is a possibility the
date could change to Saturday pending the EVHS girls schedule. Coach Gerber prefers
Saturday over Friday, but those details need to be finalized. A few ideas on promoting this
event were discussed and Lori Haugh volunteered to follow up with the Timberwolves PR
firm to see if our event can be put on their schedule. Gregg Kuhn has also mentioned
hosting a silent auction during the Tip-off.
Expectations
There was discussion around helping players/parents understand the commitment to
participating in EVHS Boys Basketball and also knowing this must be communicated to be
effective. A suggestion was made to have the President of the booster club along with the
coaches address the incoming 9th grade families. Updating our EVHS basketball website
and adding more booster information and events was suggested. Russ Otto will work with
Coach Gerber to update the website over the summer. As events for next year are being
finalized, this information will be made available on-line via the website so families can
plan around the commitments of the program.
Coach Gerber's Comments
Coach G mentioned that several coaches and officers attended the recent EVAA traveling/
in-house board meeting. The booster club has a goal to improve and connect with EVAA
since the traveling and in-house programs are the first steps to teaching the foundation of
Eastview basketball. EVAA suggested having the kids assist at games with warm ups, etc.
Continuing the team announcements and after game pizza parties are also fun ways for the
players to stay connected with the high school team. The coaches have also considered
changing their lettering policy to a point system that may require EVAA or community
involvement. Coach Gerber mentioned some ideas for next year and long-term planning as
well. Some of those ideas included team building, service projects, nutritional seminar,
new trophy case, EVHS basketball hall of fame, sponsoring an alumni basketball event,
banners for achievements, etc.
Summer camp forms are on-line at the EVHS boys basketball website. Summer super
group (Mon/Tues/Thurs) in the weight room and shooting league in the south gym will still
be at EVHS.
6th Man Club By-Laws
Steve Radermacher commented that the officers have been working on putting together
booster club by-laws to be implemented this next year. As officers and members transition
in and out of the booster club the by-laws will help lay the foundation and provide guidance
for policies and procedures to ensure smooth transitions from year to year. The by-laws
will be presented for approval by the booster club members before implementation.
The meeting adjourned around 8:25 p.m..
The next meeting is Monday, May 18 at 7:00 p.m.-in Room A204 (Coach Gerber's
classroom)
